Energy For Our Future Project

Day 1-2: Research: Individually you will research 3 issues and possible solutions to innovate off of. *Each group member must do their own research!
  • What do you know about this issue?
  • What solutions are already available?
  • What are the pros and cons of those solutions?
  • Find helpful facts and information & images
Day 2-3: Sketch out 3 different solutions/plans!!!!- use your notebook paper!
Partner/Group:
Day 2- 3: Decision Matrix: Based on your research, choose the best form of alternative energy or solution to help reduce our real world issues. Use the Decision Matrix Template to help make your decision. 3 each on the Matrix! * Decision Matrix Example on my blog. *Each partner should have this in their notebook!
Day 3-4: Complete the Design Brief handout in your notebook. * Design Brief Example on my blog *Each partner should have this in their notebook!

Project B. 3

Welcome to our first design project. You will use Google Slides as a portfolio to showcase your work. Below are some more helpful info to assist you on your first design! Remember to document everything in your notebook! Best of luck!

Slide 1: Group Name
Slide 2: Design Brief (see Design Brief below)
Slide 3: Research! Copy and paste designs/ images you looked up on the internet. Explain how you innovated off of the original design. All images from each partner/group should be on this slide.
Slide 4: Annotated design sketches - 2 from each partner!! Annotated Sketches must include:dimensions (views- front, side, and back) . Along with materials used, and how much weight it must hold.

Slide 5: Design Process Notes *Each day both partners should be documenting their progress of the design process.
Slide 6: Decision Matrix- which design was chosen and why? * ONE OF YOUR CHOSEN CRITERIA SHOULD BE THAT YOUR FURNITURE HAS A MAX OF 6 pieces. Take a picture of your Matrix and upload this or create your own Matrix onto the slide (you choose).

Slide 7: Final CAD design created using TinkerCAD. Consider the Design Elements when creating your furniture. Ex: Each person could create the same design switching up the colors or textures.

Welcome!

Marysville Middle School
Innovations 2019-2020
Mrs. Raymond
“Education is the most powerful weapon for changing the world” –Nelson Mandela
Welcome to Project Lead The Way at Marysville Middle School.  I hope you had a wonderful and relaxing summer!  It’s time to have some fun while learning
Elective Course Rationale
STEM Education is the acronym referring to the academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics and addresses the skills needed for students to be competitive and prepared in the 21st century. The course is guided by the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and is aligned to the Common Core Standards for Science. We will be using Project Lead The Way curriculum for Design and Modeling and the App Creator course.
I look forward to working with my students to further their understanding of STEM.  In order to achieve the highest level of success this year, I have the following expectations that I ask you to understand.
Classroom Expectations and Behavior Students are expected to:

  • Be on time. Students not in their seats when the bell rings will be given a tardy
  • Be prepared. Come to class each day with pencils/pen, Engineering Notebook, and required supplies
  • Raise your hand to participate and wait to be called on
  • Listen by having your voice off, eyes on the speaker
  • Work as a team and listen to all members
  • Use equipment safely and appropriately
  • Return supplies to designated areas
  • Complete all assignments in a timely fashion
  • Have a good attitude about learning and actively participate in class
  • Use the handbook and discipline code to guide behavior

Consequences:
You are responsible  for your own actions. Poor behavior will result in 1 or more of the following:
  1. Verbal warning → 2. Written Warning (participation points deducted) →  3. Detention →  Other (TBD)

Grading and Assignments:

Grades will be based primarily on classwork, participation, and projects
  • Formative Assessments (Notebooks, activities, peer reviews) — 40 %
  • Major Summative Assessments (Tests, Reports, Projects (participation) — 60 %
  • Exams will count for 10% of your grade
Participation is a part of your grade and should be taken seriously. The participation grade consists of:
  • Raising your hand to volunteer for an answer or an activity
  • Staying on task during partner activities
  • Bringing all proper materials and supplies to class
  • Following classroom rules and procedures

Engineering Notebooks:
Engineering notebooks will be distributed during the first week of school.  These books will be used for notes, drawings, ideas, etc.  The content of these notebooks will be graded, so it’s important to keep them organized and up to date.
Absent and Late Work Policy:
You will be given one full day for each day you are absent to make up your assignments. 1-5 days late = 25% off 5-10 days late = 50% off 10 days = 75% off

You are responsible to find out what you missed and make the work up in a timely fashion. You may find this information by:

  1. Checking the Absent Folder 2. Asking 2 classmates what you missed   3. Checking Skyward

If you have done 1-3 and are still confused, please ask Mrs. Raymond for help!

Communication:

Communication between home and school is a crucial to ensure your success in school.  I will communicate with you in the following ways:

I am available during lunch, recess and after school for extra help.  These times need to be arranged with me prior to meeting time.
Please fill out and sign the attached sheet and return to me by September 13, 2019.  I am looking forward to a successful year. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you,
Mrs. Raymond

Thursday 5/16 and Friday 5/17 Plans

Hello folks,

Thanks for being super awesome while I am away. There is plenty to do, so I expect that everyone is working on the following:

1. Diagnosing your case- you will have to wait until I return to confirm. In this case, move on to the Zombie Project.

2. Toxin Labs (if not complete)- see the people below  if you need assistance!
     1st hour-  Teddy/Avery                  4th hour- Avery/Kara                       7th hour- Colin/Taylor
     2nd hour-  Calvin/Sydney              6th  hour- Garret/Meghan
     * Honestly, anyone that you ask will be able to guide students with this!

3. Press Release Video- you must have a script/plan before filming. There are 5 specific areas to do this. a. Robotic's room  b. small room to the left of my desk (by fridge) c. outside (we should see you from within our classroom) d. hallway by Mrs. Seilheimer's lockers e. area within the double doors (across from Mrs. Seilhemier's room)
* Since these are the only locations available, you must use your time wisely!
* In Google Classroom I have included the FlipGrid App join code or you can post your video there. We WILL POST THESE ON MONDAY as there are still many students who are still not finished with this project. Please remember that your case and all cases are CONFIDENTIAL! HIPAA Law in effect! If you are talking about your specific case to others, points will be deducted.

4. Begin your Zombie Apocalypse Project! This can be a partner project or an independent project. Please review the packet carefully. You will be creating the ultimate zombie by tweaking parts of the brain. For example, particular brain parts may have become damaged or have lesions on them that are causing your zombie to behave differently than the standard zombie. At some point in the project, you will either need to find an image that will represent your zombie. I will print these out for you when I return. You can also choose to draw your zombie instead.

I will be providing a list to Mrs. Steven's of who should be working on what. I have a really great idea of where everyone is at right now. Again, use your time wisely. If you are working on other work/homework or doing nothing at all, I will have Mrs. Steven's let me know and points will be deducted. No one should be completely finished with both projects.

*Monday will be a day of catch-up!

Please be kind to Mrs. Stevens- she is amazing and we are lucky to have her here for both days. Participation points are doubled for both days, so be on your best!

Have a great weekend & see you Monday,
Mrs. R.

Brain Dissection Help Needed!/ Lab Guidelines

Dear Families,

We are looking for parent/guardians to come in and assist students during your child's class period in
Innovations. With your guidance (I will provide an answer key), you will confirm whether or not students are labeling the brain correctly, ensuring that scalpels are all accounted for, and monitoring students to ensure that all lab materials are returned and cleaned.

If you are interested in helping for the period, email me at eraymond@marysvilleschools.us. We greatly appreciate your help!

Thank you,
Mrs. Raymond

Lab Guidelines

1. Scalpels are dangerous and we are using high grade scalpels that are used for surgical procedures. If anyone is messing around, you will be removed from the classroom and will get a zero for the day.

2. Gloves- I will show you on Wednesday about sizing and how to properly remove them so that you do not get sheep on you. You're welcome.

3. Clothing- please dress comfortably and wear shoes. If your feet are showing, no dissection. I do have aprons and safety goggles for you to wear as well. Girls- it is recommended that you wear your hair up or pulled back.

4. There will be volunteers in the classroom. Again, I know you are all wonderful individuals and are very respectful. Thank you for showing this to our guests as well.

5. Documenting the dissection- you may bring your phone on Monday to take pictures of the sheep brain. This is not to take selfies of you and your classmates. Please leave your chromebook in your locker, unless you are using that to take pictures. You will need your engineering notebook.

6. Cleaning area after dissection: you are responsible for cleaning up your area. This includes disinfecting all tools, tables, and protective gear. Your brain should be properly discarded in the trash. All scalpels must be accounted for before you leave the classroom.

7. No eating or drinking during this lab- we do not put anything in our mouths during lab. Common sense prevails!

Thanks for being awesome!
Mrs. R.
