Parent/Child Book Report
This language arts homework assignment is designed to help your child become a lifelong reader. Life long readers read for pleasure. Like anything else, it is a skill that needs to be developed. Given encouragement, tools, and time; this skill is one of the best gifts we can give our children. Children who learn to read for pleasure find those demanding assignments in middle and high school less grueling and actually somewhat enjoyable.
Best of all, a lifelong reader will develop the independence to do his/her homework with little to no assistance, math not included. In my opinion, that’s an incredible incentive for parents!
Here’s the assignment:
- With your guidance, have your child choose a chapter book that YOU will read to him or her.
- Find 20 minutes or more each day to snuggle close together and READ.
- During the story, stop and predict, question, make connections, and summarize what is happening in the story at the end of a chapter. The key is to enjoy reading to your child while they enjoy spending quality time with you!
- Together with your child, decorate a “filled” tissue box. (We can use the Kleenex for runny noses!)
- Be creative and have fun with this Parent/Child Book Report!
The tissue box should include the following:
Title of the Book
Author’s Name
Names of the main characters
Setting
Problem/Solution
Plot/Summary
Theme (Author’s Message)
Report Creator’s Names
If possible, we would love to have you present your finished book report with your child. Since everyone’s schedules are different, this assignment can be done anytime between now and the end of the school year (June!).
Please let me know if you have any questions. When you are ready to present, let me know and we can figure out a time that works best for your schedule.
I hope you find this task exciting and enjoy the time spent with your fourth grader.
Smiles,
Mrs. Raymond
