Monday 3/18/19

Hello!

This is your to-do today:

1. Take your quiz. You may use notes and your PLTW (no friends and no Google).

2. Tidy up your notebook as I will be collecting them this week for a grade. All of the table of contents should match the titles. I will toss any loose leaf papers hanging out of your notebook and take points away. See example of a neat and organized notebook on small table up front.

3. Once you are finished, you may work on other work quietly.

I also want to let you know that we are currently in 4th place and Strussione has about $100 to add  from her auction. We will plan on having a game day/free day on Tuesday. You can even hook up your gaming devices to my projector. This will be $1 to join the game/free day and another $1 to bring in your own food to eat. I will provide a safe place for your monitors and gaming devices. The class period with the highest amount raised, will be provided with donuts. If we do not have a lot of interest in certain hours, we will continue on with our next lesson and there will be no game/free day.

On Friday my second hour discussed bringing in over $80 on Monday. So as of right now, second hour will earn donuts! If you have any questions, see Ms. Strussione or email me.

The following people will be collecting from each hour:
1. Peyton/Teddy
2. Logan/Kaiden
4. Noah/Trenton
6. Meghan/Mattie
7. Colt/Aiden

Thanks so much,
Mrs. R.

Many Thanks to McLaren Port Hospital!

Dear Families,

We are very fortunate to have received a very generous donation from McLaren Port Huron and we are beyond excited! With their donation, we were able to purchase some items that really benefit our students and for years to come. These items include blood pressure machines, thermometers, and stethoscopes for taking our vitals (our current project). We now also have lab coats in all sizes! This will help students to get into the role as medical professionals as they analyze patient cases, interview, and diagnose their patients - their classmates! We even have boxes and boxes of different sized gloves, which will come in handy for dissecting sheep brains!

We are so incredibly grateful to McLaren PH for their donation! Please check out our Innovations' students using all of our new goodies here as we learn about our vitals and how to take them!

Stay tuned,
Mrs. R.

6th and 7th Hour

Thanks for completing the following:

1. Cut and glue the packet into your notebook. Rip apart the packet and glue each individual page into your notebook. Please be sure to title this "Experimental Design" and put this is your table of contents too! Thank you so much for returning my glue and scissors!

2. Login to MyPLTW lesson 1.1

3. Read Career Connections down at the bottom of this lesson.

4. In your notebook:

    a. brainstorm three other medical professionals that can take vitals.

    b. answer the following questions:

  1. What could cause you to have higher or lower than average vital readings?
  2. How might a patient’s blood pressure be impacted if they’re nervous being in a doctor’s office or emergency room? Why might it be good to check a patient’s blood pressure more than once during their visit?
  3. Why is it important to get a resting respiratory rate as a vital sign rather than a rate while a person is active?
5. Read about the Experimental Design that you glued into your notebook.

6. Complete the Experimental Design Practice Problems in lesson 1.2. There are 4 different experiments to read with questions that follow. Please be sure to hit submit when all are completed.
*If you cannot find it on your PLTW, in the search bar type "Experimental Design Practice Problems" and it should pop up!

7. Finish any vitals/experiments from Day 1, 2 or 3 that are not complete!

Thank you,
Mrs. R.

Many Thanks!

Dear families and community members,

We are so grateful for your help in partaking in our Biomedical Career Week. Students were able to see the various roles you take on to help others in the medical field. Students enjoyed your stories and have a better understanding of the different careers they can possibly persue in the future. THANK You!

We are currently wrapping up the semester with our midterm exams. Study guides were passed out two weeks ago and exam items have been posted to Plannbook. Mother nature has helped to postpone our remaining exams, so there is still plenty of time to study!

Best of luck,
Mrs. R.

3.2 Outbreak Project

Dear Families,

Students are currently wrapping up their Outbreak Project where students are using and applying all of their knowledge that they have learned from this class to determine the Outbreak in Montgomery Hills. Specifically, students are reviewing and analyzing 6 menus, 10 medical case files, and 20 epidemiology interviews in order to determine:

  1. the food item responsible for the outbreak along with the attack rate
  2. the identified toxin found in the food item along with the percent of how many were affected
  3. the location of the food/toxin found
  4. how the illness is spread and ways to stay safe
  5. the symptoms of the toxin and what to do if you have those symptoms

This 2 week culminating assessment task has been incredible to watch as students complete the varying steps (coming up with a process of elimination, attack rates, toxin lab work to determine the toxin, and creating their Breaking Videos) as they have been engaged and excited. We look forward to seeing their Breaking News Reports when students will share the information that they have learned about the Outbreak. These videos can be found on our Google Classroom, so ask them to share their video with you!

We will soon begin learning about forensics, creating DNA necklaces (using their DNA), and solving a murder mystery- Who Killed Santa?- which will wrap up our week before Christmas Break.

Stay tuned,
Mrs. R.

Agenda for 11/5/18-11/9/18

Hello,

This week we are wrapping up unit 2, which is all about the Nervous System. Students have had the opportunity to dissect sheep brains (with and without tumors), have investigated neurological disorders, and are writing brochures and pamphlets to give to their patient about their diagnosis.

On Thursday, we will begin our Zombie Apocalypse Brain Project. To see the specifics, check out our lesson plans here.

Click here to see our learning in action!

Let's have a great week,
Mrs. R
