“Education is the most powerful weapon for changing the world” –Nelson Mandela
Welcome to Project Lead The Way at Marysville Middle School. I hope you had a wonderful and relaxing summer! It’s time to have some fun while learning
Elective Course Rationale
STEM Education is the acronym referring to the academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics and addresses the skills needed for students to be competitive and prepared in the 21st century. The course is guided by the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and is aligned to the Common Core Standards for Science. We will be using Project Lead The Way curriculum for Design and Modeling and the App Creator course.
I look forward to working with my students to further their understanding of STEM. In order to achieve the highest level of success this year, I have the following expectations that I ask you to understand.
Classroom Expectations and Behavior Students are expected to:
- Be on time. Students not in their seats when the bell rings will be given a tardy
- Be prepared. Come to class each day with pencils/pen, Engineering Notebook, and required supplies
- Raise your hand to participate and wait to be called on
- Listen by having your voice off, eyes on the speaker, and hands/feet still
- Work as a team and listen to all members
- Use equipment safely and appropriately
- Return supplies to designated areas
- Complete all assignments in a timely fashion
- Have a good attitude about learning and actively participate in class
- Use the handbook and discipline code to guide behavior
Consequences:
You are responsible for your own actions. Poor behavior will result in 1 or more of the following:
- Verbal warning → 2. Written Warning → 3. Action plan filled out by you and signed by your parent/guardian → 4. Detention → Other (TBD)
Grading and Assignments:
Grades will be based primarily on classwork, participation, and projects
- Formative Assessments (Notebooks, activities, peer reviews) — 40 %
- Major Summative Assessments (Tests, Reports, Projects (participation) — 60 %
- Exams will count for 10% of your grade
Participation is a part of your grade and should be taken seriously. The participation grade consists of:
- Raising your hand to volunteer for an answer or an activity
- Staying on task during partner activities
- Bringing all proper materials and supplies to class
- Following classroom rules and procedures
Engineering Notebooks:
Engineering notebooks will be distributed during the first week of school. These books will be used for notes, drawings, ideas, etc. The content of these notebooks will be graded, so it’s important to keep them organized and up to date.
Absent and Late Work Policy:
You will be given one full day for each day you are absent to make up your assignments. 10 % will be taken off for each day an assignment is late (not including weekends). You are responsible to find out what you missed and make the work up in a timely fashion. You may find this information by:
- Checking the Absent Folder 2. Asking 2 classmates what you missed 3. Checking Skyward
If you have done 1-3 and are still confused, please ask Mrs. Raymond for help!
